| Usability Objective: Assess anesthesia information management systems from three vendors to help a hospital network move from paper to electronic documentation in operating rooms and non-operative environments. Make recommendations on usability, design, and training, to inform procurement and implementation decisions. |

| Procedure: Using scenarios, we prompted anesthesiologists to enter information on drug administration and procedures as well as review patient vital statistics. The tasks were realistic and overlapping so that we could see how well the interaction with the system responded to high pressure situations. The issues where identified and reviewed in a post analysis with Morae and other video sources. |

| The patient is the primary focus, everything else is secondary | |||||
| Insights: - The doctors main attention is on the patient. Documentation is secondary. Therefore currency cues (a sense of where you are in the application) at first glance is very extremely important. - Information entry must be faster than the current paper form - The doctors need complete information. Information about the patient, especially vitals and drugs, cannot be hidden or difficult to see Results: Final reports to the decision makers highlighted critical usability issues which immediately removed one candidate and then identified strengths and weaknesses of the remaining applications. Design recommendations were delivered to the vendors and key concepts were identified so that training could be focused to manage the implementation and rollout. Link: |
